With the rising number of younger adults succumbing to colorectal cancer in the US annually, a cancer researcher has outlined four strategies to lower the chances of developing the illness.

Specialists are uncertain about the reasons behind it, but there has been a consistent rise in the number of individuals under 50 receiving a diagnosis of colorectal cancer every year since the 1990s.

Dr. Bill Dahut, the chief scientific officer for the American Cancer Society, explained to Business Insider that while certain genetic conditions may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, the rise in cases is likely influenced by external factors.

Consuming an unhealthy diet, being overweight, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and having inflammatory bowel disease increase the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer.

Dahut provided insights on changes in behavior that may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

Reduce consumption of red meat

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, red meat is considered “probably carcinogenic” to humans. The agency categorizes substances and circumstances based on research indicating their potential to cause cancer.

This categorization is grounded in evidence suggesting an elevated risk of developing colorectal cancer, along with emerging findings indicating a potential connection to higher risks of breast and prostate cancers.

The ACS suggests reducing red meat intake and incorporating other protein sources like fish, poultry, and beans into your diet more frequently, as there is no considered safe level of red meat consumption.

Reduce sugar intake

It is not accurate to claim that sugar feeds cancer in individuals with the disease, but reducing sugar intake is believed to aid in cancer prevention. Last year, Dr. Suneel Kamath, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Cleveland Clinic, spoke with Medical News Today.

This is due to the fact that obesity is a recognized risk factor for colorectal cancer, and excessive sugar consumption is a contributing factor to obesity.

Consume alcohol in moderation

Consuming alcohol raises the likelihood of developing various forms of cancer, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such as mouth and throat, colon and rectum, liver, and breast.

Even minimal alcohol consumption has been linked to a higher chance of developing colorectal cancer, as reported by the National Cancer Institute. This occurs as the body metabolizes drinks into acetaldehyde, causing damage to cell DNA and potentially leading to uncontrolled cell growth, the CDC explains.
