Tragic Incident in Brazil: Man Dies After Wife Sets Him on Fire in Store

André Chapeta, a 50-year-old man, succumbed to devastating burn injuries on Friday, less than a week after his life came to a tragic end in a horrifying incident at a fish market owned by his wife, who allegedly flew into a jealous rage and set him on fire

On Monday, at a store in Rio de Janeiro, Ana María Paixaõ, the owner of the fish market, reportedly spotted Chapeta sitting at a table.

A surveillance camera captured the shocking sequence of events that unfolded.

Paixaõ was seen walking past the counter and seemingly opening a bottle, which she then used to douse a flammable liquid over her husband’s body. Allegedly, she followed it up by flicking a lighter and setting him ablaze.

Chapeta, engulfed in flames, made a desperate dash for the fish market’s stockroom. The severity of his burn injuries necessitated immediate medical attention, and he was rushed to Getúlio Vargas Hospital.

The medical team fought tirelessly, treating burns covering 92 percent of Chapeta’s body. However, despite their efforts, he tragically succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

Thursday morning saw Paixaõ taken into custody by the police, only to be released later that night.

The release was authorized after a judge failed to sign off on an arrest warrant, leaving many shocked and dismayed by the decision.

André Chapeta, a 50-year-old man, succumbed to devastating burn injuries on Friday, less than a week after his life came to a tragic end in a horrifying incident at a fish market owned by his wife, who allegedly flew into a jealous rage and set him on fire.

Chief Flávio Ferreira of the Civil Police expressed his belief that the incident was fueled by Paixaõ’s jealousy towards her husband.

He disclosed that the couple’s 30-year relationship had allegedly been marked by episodes of domestic violence.

While Paixaõ claimed that she acted in self-defense, stating that she had been previously beaten before setting Chapeta on fire, investigators rejected her allegation upon analyzing the surveillance footage available.

“What she says is not what the image shows. The image shows the victim sitting in a chair. She arrives coldly, throws the liquid, and sets him on fire,” Ferreira emphasized.

“She was not at that moment in a vulnerable situation, she was not in a situation in which she would be imminently attacked. On the contrary, as I said, he was sitting and posed no risk to her physical integrity at that moment.”

The investigation into this horrifying crime remains ongoing, with authorities committed to seeking justice for André Chapeta and providing support to his grieving family.
