NM State High Court Sides With Governor on Fines for Health Rules Violators

The New Mexico Supreme Court agrees with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s authority to impose large fines on businesses and others that violate her COVID-19 public health restrictions. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the court ruled unanimously on the issue yesterday. The state is now free to impose fines up to five-thousand dollars a day on violators of COVID-19 restrictions. Chief Justice Michael Vigil says state lawmakers have “clearly given the Governor the ability to issue civil administrative penalties for violations of emergency orders.”
