Governor Kathy Hochul of New York State has announced the allocation of $12 million in federal funding to provide one-time Family Economic Support payments to low-income families with children.
This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to assist those financially impacted by the pandemic.
New York’s eligibility for this additional funding stems from the success in distributing federal assistance from the Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund to vulnerable residents.
The state had previously received $128 million in federal funds through this program as part of the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021.
Conditions that fully expanded their initial allocation, like New York, became eligible to receive additional funds from states with unspent appropriations.
Governor Hochul expressed that this federal funding aims to provide a much-needed financial boost to households suffering economically from the pandemic.
The funds are intended for non-recurring benefits to families dealing with specific short-term situations or needs, such as childcare and school-related expenses, which often strain household budgets.

Federal Initiative Provides Financial Lifeline to New York’s Vulnerable Families
Representative Brian Higgins emphasized the importance of this financial assistance, drawing parallels to the positive impact of advance payments of the Child Tax Credit during the pandemic, which helped lift children out of poverty.
He stated that every extra bit of financial support goes a long way in helping families cope with their increased expenses.
The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance will oversee the distribution of this $12 million.
The funds will be directed to New York households with children aged 17 and under who are recipients of Public Assistance.
Approximately 120,000 eligible families are expected to benefit from this program, each receiving a one-time payment of $100.
Barbara C. Guinn, Acting Commissioner of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, emphasized that these modest, one-time payments are designed to assist very low-income households in providing for their children and addressing their basic household needs during challenging times.
The payments were mailed out on October 17, ensuring that low-income families in New York can experience some financial relief while covering their household expenses.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand supported Governor Hochul’s efforts in aiding struggling families.
She reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that all New York families facing economic hardships have access to essential household needs.
