Minnesota’s Bold Redemption with a New State Flag Design

Minnesota revealed its updated state flag on Tuesday, addressing longstanding criticism of the original design’s portrayal of Native Americans.

The State Emblems Redesign Commission announced the selection of a new flag featuring a white North star on a dark blue shape representing the state of Minnesota, with a light blue background symbolizing its abundant waters.

Minnesota artist Andrew Prekker, the mastermind behind the chosen design, has shared his surreal experience upon learning that his work has been selected.

In a statement on the commission’s website, he shared, “It’s such a rare privilege to be able to contribute to our state’s history in such a special way like this.

It’s an achievement that I hope brings a lot of unity and pride to our land, and I will hold that fact with great honor for the rest of my life.”

In a statement, Luis Fitch, the chairman of the commission, highlighted the objective of promoting unity through the introduction of the new flag.

Minnesota revealed its updated state flag on Tuesday, addressing longstanding criticism of the original design’s portrayal of Native Americans.

In his statement, he expressed his goal of uniting with the flag rather than further dividing us. He expressed hope that the design will resonate with various cultures.

The previous Minnesota state flag faced criticism for its design and its portrayal of Indigenous Americans.

In response to concerns, the state legislature passed a bill in May 2023 to redesign both the flag and the state seal.

Dating back to the 1960s, critics have been calling for change regarding the depiction of a Native American on horseback at the center of the seal. This image has been seen by some as referencing the displacement of Native people in Minnesota’s history.

The final flag design was chosen from 2,500 public submissions, including tributes to iconic Minnesota symbols such as the state bird (the loon) and the monarch butterfly.
