Long Island Native Cole Brauer Makes History as First US Woman to Solo Sail Around the Globe

Cole Brauer achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first American woman to sail solo around the world without stopping.

The 29-year-old finished as the runner-up in the Global Solo Challenge and hails from East Hampton. The teachers at East Hampton High School observed her well-documented journey with admiration.

“It brings pride to the entire school and community,” stated principal Sarah Smith.

“All the similarities in her current behavior,” mentioned video production teacher Jeremy Quitko, “remind me of the time she was in my classroom, appearing on camera and editing her own videos.”

Teachers and administrators recalled her strong determination and motivation. She was recognized as the most unique student in her senior class, participated in the track team, and was a member of the Art Honor Society.

At school, there was a sailing club, but Brauer did not participate, while her twin sister Dalton did. Brauer discovered sailing while living in Hawaii, sparking a lifelong passion she continues to pursue.

In October, Brauer embarked on a remarkable journey covering 30,000 miles. The voyage took him from Spain, along the west coast of Africa, to Australia, around the tip of South America, and back to his starting point.

Brauer endured a challenging 130-day journey, encountering 30-foot waves and hurricane-force winds along the way.

At one point, cameras captured the moment when rough seas tossed her across the boat, resulting in a rib injury. On another occasion, she was extremely dehydrated and had to administer an IV on her own.

During her appearance on the TODAY show, she was questioned about how she persevered through the journey.

“There’s really no option at that point when you’re so far away from land, there’s no rescue,” Brauer stated.

Adam Fine, the superintendent of East Hampton schools, used to be Cole’s principal and recalls a moment when she assisted a stranger involved in a car accident.

“It really reflected her personality – without any hesitation, she went to help someone involved in the accident,” Fine said.

“Seeing her confidently inserting her own IV in videos reassures me of her ability to handle such situations.”

Brauer is seen as an inspiration by current students who followed her journey.

“She clearly possesses the drive and commitment,” remarked sophomore Maya Taveras. It’s great to witness her achieving her goal.

“It just goes to show that coming from a small town doesn’t limit your ability to make a significant impact on the world,” shared Ryleigh O’Donnell, a senior. Make a name for yourself and create a significant impact.

Recognizing Cole’s achievement has motivated administrators to acknowledge other graduates and their successes.
