Global Warming Alert: World Temporarily Exceeds 2-Degree Limit for First Time, Scientists Warn

The Earth’s temperature surged briefly above a critical threshold that has long been a cause for alarm among climate scientists. 

The data, shared by Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, based in Europe, revealed that the global average temperature exceeded 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time. 

This event occurred last Friday, highlighting the relentless march of global warming and the potential for catastrophic and irreversible consequences.

While this breach of the 2-degree mark is temporary and does not signify a permanent shift in the Earth’s climate, it serves as an ominous indicator of the planet’s increasing heat. Samantha Burgess noted that the global temperature reached 2.06 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline.

According to the data, global temperatures on that fateful Friday averaged 1.17 degrees above the 1991-2020 levels, making it the warmest November 17 on record. However, compared to the pre-industrial era, before widespread fossil fuel burning and climate-altering human activities, the temperature was 2.06 degrees warmer.

This development comes just ahead of the UN COP28 climate conference in Dubai, where countries will assess their progress toward the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The agreement aims to limit global warming to 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels, with an even more ambitious target of limiting it to 1.5 degrees.

Samantha Burgess emphasized that one day above 2 degrees does not constitute a breach of the Paris Agreement but underscores the approaching limits set by international agreements. She cautioned that we can expect more frequent occurrences of 1.5-degree and 2-degree days in the coming months and years.

It’s crucial to note that the data from Copernicus is preliminary and will require confirmation through real-life observations in the coming weeks.

Approaching 1.5°C Warming Urges Swift Climate Action

Even in the event that nations hold to their present commitments to reduce emissions, a recent report from the United Nations emphasized that global warming could range from 2.5 to 2.9 degrees during this century. 

However, every fraction of a degree beyond 1.5 increases the risk of severe consequences, including deadly extreme weather events and potential tipping points like polar ice sheet collapses and coral reef degradation.

Professor Richard Allan, a climate scientist at the University of Reading in the UK, described this breach as a “canary in the coal mine,” emphasizing the urgency of addressing greenhouse gas emissions. 

He also pointed out that surpassing 2 degrees on isolated days was expected before a sustained breach of the 2-degree target.

This information is released after a year marked by extreme weather phenomena and a record-breaking 12 months of high temperatures, both of which were exacerbated by the climate crisis. As data consistently exceeds predictions, scientists are becoming increasingly alarmed, underscoring the urgent requirement for comprehensive measures to address climate change.
