According to authorities, the siblings were digging a hole on a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea around 3 p.m. when the sand collapsed, ensnaring them in its depths. The hole, reportedly 6-feet deep, caved in on the children, revealed a spokesperson from Broward Sheriff Fire to CNN affiliate WFOR.

A tragic incident unfolded on a Florida beach Tuesday, resulting in the death of a 7-year-old girl and the hospitalization of her 9-year-old brother after they became trapped in a sand hole, as reported by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Her brother, however, is currently receiving treatment at Broward Health Medical Center and is reported to be in stable condition, confirmed an official speaking to WFOR.

Authorities disclosed that the family, hailing from Indiana, was on vacation at the time of the incident, which is now subject to ongoing investigation by the sheriff’s office.

CNN’s attempts to gather further information from the sheriff’s office, the sheriff’s fire rescue department, and other relevant agencies have been made, but responses are pending.

The American Lifeguard Association has underscored the importance of adhering to safety guidelines at the beach, urging beachgoers not to dig holes deeper than knee-level.

Wyatt Werneth, a spokesperson for the association, emphasized the proactive role lifeguards play in averting such tragedies, asserting that prevention is key.

It is essential for people to make sure they leave the beach in the same condition they found it, including refilling any holes dug to prevent possible dangers.
