Elon Musk Updates on Successful Neuralink Brain Chip Implantation with Patient’s Healthy Recovery

Elon Musk has revealed that Neuralink, his brain technology venture, has achieved a major milestone. For the very first time, the company has successfully implanted its revolutionary brain chip into a human patient.

The 52-year-old entrepreneur took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the news, mentioning that the unidentified patient is “recovering well” post-receiving the implant on Sunday. 

Musk, who established Neuralink in 2016, expressed optimism about the initial results, indicating promising neuron spike detection. However, he refrained from disclosing further details regarding the patient’s condition or the procedure specifics.

The implant, roughly the size of a quarter, features numerous minuscule threadlike electrodes designed to be inserted directly into the brain. 

These electrodes serve to relay electrical signals from neurons, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Positioned within the brain’s region responsible for movement intention, the chip’s placement enables enhanced control, according to Reuters.

Musk, in subsequent X updates, revealed Neuralink’s plans for its debut product named “Telepathy,” previously referred to as Link. 

It is still unclear whether these indicate separate products or if “Telepathy” was created to replace the original brain implant, but Musk clarified its revolutionary potential.

The envisioned product aims to empower users to interact with phones and computers purely through thought, initially benefiting individuals with limb impairments. 

Musk cited physicist Stephen Hawking as an inspiration, envisioning enhanced communication capabilities surpassing traditional methods.

Neuralink Faces Allegations and Regulatory Challenges

Having disclosed his intention to undergo the Neuralink procedure in 2022, Musk continues to underscore his commitment to the project. 

This development follows a similar procedure conducted by Neuralink’s competitor, Precision Neuroscience, in June 2023.

Neuralink attained approval from the Food and Drug Administration for human trials in May 2023, subsequently initiating participant recruitment in September.

Despite its strides, Neuralink has weathered scrutiny, particularly concerning animal welfare allegations. 

However, a December 2022 report by Reuters indicated that the Agriculture Department found no significant violations apart from a 2019 incident involving the use of an unauthorized sealant by a Neuralink surgeon during a monkey study.

Four lawmakers have urged the US Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate possible securities fraud committed by Musk due to mounting concerns about safety and transparency. 

There have been allegations regarding the adverse effects observed in monkeys that were part of Neuralink experiments. These effects include brain swelling, seizures, and paralysis.

Recent revelations also unveiled regulatory challenges for Neuralink, with Reuters reporting a $2,480 fine for violating US Department of Transportation rules regarding hazardous material transportation and improper packaging of hazardous waste.
