A 4.0 magnitude earthquake shook the Amarillo area on Sunday afternoon, near the border of New Mexico and Texas. The epicenter of the quake was located just north of the Canadian River, approximately 90 minutes away from Amarillo.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was in the northwest of Dalhart, TX, and east of the town of Clayton, NM. Although no significant damage or injuries were immediately reported, residents from Amarillo to Dumas said they felt the tremors.
Local emergency services are closely monitoring the situation to address any potential concerns that may arise. Residents are strongly advised to stay vigilant and promptly report any structural damage or hazardous conditions resulting from the earthquake.
Earthquakes are not common in this area, but they do occur occasionally near the western Texas panhandle. The USGS has reported that there may be aftershocks in the next few days. It is important for residents to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety guidelines and be prepared for any future seismic activity.
