IBM has suspended its advertising campaign on the social media platform X in response to the platform’s owner, Elon Musk’s controversial actions. This is an important move for X.
This decision came shortly after Musk endorsed an antisemitic post on X, which was perceived as “the actual truth” of Jewish people’s actions. This endorsement has sparked widespread concern, leading to immediate reactions from advertisers.
Internal communications at X reveal that employees received queries from advertisers, troubled by Musk’s perceived antisemitic comments and their ads appearing alongside white nationalist and Nazi content.
As a result, IBM, a major advertiser, has suspended about $1 million in advertising planned for the year’s final quarter.
X’s chief executive, Linda Yaccarino, addressed the issue, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to being inclusive and opposing discrimination. She reiterated the company’s stance against antisemitism and discrimination in a note to employees and a public message on X.
In its statement, IBM highlighted its zero-tolerance policy towards hate speech and discrimination, leading to suspending its advertising on X pending further investigation.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of concern regarding Musk’s management of X. Musk, who acquired Twitter and rebranded it as X, has been accused of allowing and even fostering antisemitic abuse on the platform.
He has made contentious comments about George Soros, a frequent target of antisemitic attacks, and clashed with the Anti-Defamation League. This group has pointed out the rise in antisemitism on X.

Elon Musk Sparks Antisemitism Concerns

Musk’s endorsement of a post alleging Jewish communities’ hatred towards whites and minorities has drawn sharp criticism. Jewish organizations have likened this rhetoric to the “Great Replacement Theory,” a dangerous antisemitic conspiracy theory.
The issue of antisemitism on social media has gained attention recently, with platforms like TikTok also facing criticism for not adequately addressing the rise in antisemitism and harassment.
Amid these controversies, Musk met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a Tesla factory following allegations of antisemitism against him.
X’s response to these challenges includes previous interventions by Ms. Yaccarino in antisemitic content situations. This month, she responded to concerns about such posts not being removed from the platform.
The situation raises questions about the impact of Musk’s actions and statements on X’s advertising relationships and overall platform governance, particularly in light of the increased scrutiny on social media platforms for their handling of hate speech and discrimination.
