In the race for New Mexico’s Second Congressional District, the candidates hold divergent opinions on federal abortion policy. However, they both maintain a stance against interfering with the state’s existing abortion protections.
Democratic incumbent, U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez, expressed his commitment to safeguarding abortion rights and ensuring access to birth control on his campaign website.
“Healthcare access is a fundamental right, and it is crucial that politicians in Congress and state legislatures do not hinder women’s access to healthcare. Gabe is determined to resist any Republican-led efforts in Congress that aim to prohibit abortion or restrict access to birth control. He firmly believes in upholding women’s right to make choices about their own bodies.”
“If the voters of New Mexico’s Second Congressional District choose to re-elect me, I will honor the decision made by the Supreme Court. I will not endorse a nationwide ban on abortion. The responsibility to decide on this matter now rests with the people of New Mexico and our state’s leaders.”
Herrell’s campaign focused on the goal of reducing the size of the federal government and giving more power to state governments. However, her campaign website also mentions:
“I will, however, resist any endeavors to use federal tax funds to support abortions.”
According to Herrell’s campaign website, she is in favor of allowing exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk. Despite this information, her campaign has not provided any comment on the matter when requested.
Vasquez played a crucial role in supporting the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2023. This legislation aimed to prevent government-imposed restrictions on abortions and ensure that state and local governments could not demand patients to provide reasons for seeking an abortion. As of April 2023, the Women’s Health Protection Act is currently under review in the House Subcommittee on Health.
He has also expressed his support for the expansion of the child tax credit, a tax break that is based on a parent’s income levels and the number of children they have. This tax credit has been a topic of discussion among members of both political parties, with many advocating for its expansion or preservation. Republican Vice Presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, has specifically voiced his support for raising the child tax credit from $2,000 to $5,000.
I am a strong advocate for simplifying the adoption process and reducing the challenges faced by foster children. Additionally, I believe in providing tax relief for mothers by making baby supplies such as diapers or bottles more affordable.
I am also a strong proponent of increasing access to birth control and promoting education that can help prevent unintended pregnancies. Furthermore, I wholeheartedly support fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) that have brought immeasurable happiness to numerous families by enabling them to experience the joys of parenthood.
